SLC Grading System
The Ministry of Education is introducing the Letter Grading System in SLC Examinations (School Leaving Certificate) from the SLC Result 2072 Batch. The Curriculum Development Centre and Office of Controller of Examinations are doing homework to implement the Letter grading system.
So far, OCE had been using numerical grading system, while there existed four categories – Distinction, First Division, Second Division and Passed – to evaluate student’s performance. OCE had introduced the letter grading system for technical and vocational stream in the pilot phase last year. OCE had published the result of 3,256 students under the technical and vocational stream using the letter grading system.
But How does Letter Grading System actually work?

But How does Letter Grading System actually work?
Many of the SLC examinees, parents and concerned individuals are still not familiar to the letter grading system and have confusions with the working of Letter Grading System in SLC. To clear this confusion, we’ve tried to elaborate the actual facts and workings of letter grading in this article.
First of all, Percentage of the obtained marks of each subject is calculated. It can be calculated by (obtained marks / full marks) * 100.
Each subject is assigned a Letter Grade based on the Percentage obtained. The calculated percentage is mapped into its letter grade. For subject with practical, the final grade is assigned on the basis of total obtained marks. (see the table)
Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation: For every letter grade, there is a specific grade point (GP) associated with it. Each grade point is the upper limit point within its class and is used to calculate the Grade Point Average (GPA) by dividing total grade point by total number of subjects.
Assigning the Average Grade: The average grade is assigned on the basis of Grade Point Average (GPA).
SN | Interval in % | Grade | Description | Grade Point |
1 | 90 to 100 | A+ | Outstanding | 4.0 |
2 | 80 to below 90 | A | Excellent | 3.6 |
3 | 70 to below 80 | B+ | Very good | 3.2 |
4 | 60 to below 70 | B | Good | 2.8 |
5 | 50 to below 60 | C+ | Above average | 2.4 |
6 | 40 to below 50 | C | Average | 2.0 |
7 | 20 to below 40 | D | Below average | 1.6 |
8 | 1 to below 20 | E | Insufficient | 0.8 |
9 | 0 | N | Not graded | 0.0 |
The example given below will make the workings easier to understand.
A student’s obtained marks in SLC Examination are as follows:
Comp. English: Theory – 70 Practical – 24
Comp. Nepali: 78
Comp. Mathematics: 97
Comp. Science: Th – 70 Prac – 25
Comp. Social Studies: 76
Comp. Health, Pop. And Environment Education: Th – 61 Prac – 25
Opt. I Additional Mathematics: 98
Opt. II Computer Science: Th – 46 Prac – 50
Comp. Nepali: 78
Comp. Mathematics: 97
Comp. Science: Th – 70 Prac – 25
Comp. Social Studies: 76
Comp. Health, Pop. And Environment Education: Th – 61 Prac – 25
Opt. I Additional Mathematics: 98
Opt. II Computer Science: Th – 46 Prac – 50
Now calculating the Percentage obtained in each subject:
For Comp. English:
Percentage in Theory: (70/75)*100 = 93.33 | Grade: A+
Percentage in Practical: (24/25)*100 = 96 | Grade: A+
Total Obtained Marks: 94 | Grade A+
Hence, Grade is A+ and Grade Point is 4.0 for Comp. English
Percentage in Practical: (24/25)*100 = 96 | Grade: A+
Total Obtained Marks: 94 | Grade A+
Hence, Grade is A+ and Grade Point is 4.0 for Comp. English
** Grade Point for subjects having Theory and Practical marks can be calculated in this way. **
For Comp. Nepali:
Percentage: (78/100) * 100 = 78 | Grade: B+ | Grade Point: 3.2
Hence Grade Point for Comp. Nepali is 3.2
Hence Grade Point for Comp. Nepali is 3.2
** Grade Point for subjects having Theory marks only can be calculated in this way. **
Similarly, GP for Other Subjects are:
Comp. Mathematics: Percentage: 97 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4.0
Comp. Science: Percentage: 95 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4.0
Comp. Social Studies: Percentage: 76 | Grade: B+ | Grade Point: 3.2
Comp. Health, Pop. And Env. Education: Percentage: 86 | Grade: A | Grade Point: 3.6 |
Opt. I Additional Mathematics: Percentage: 98 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4.0 |
Opt. II Computer Science: Percentage: 96 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4 |
Comp. Science: Percentage: 95 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4.0
Comp. Social Studies: Percentage: 76 | Grade: B+ | Grade Point: 3.2
Comp. Health, Pop. And Env. Education: Percentage: 86 | Grade: A | Grade Point: 3.6 |
Opt. I Additional Mathematics: Percentage: 98 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4.0 |
Opt. II Computer Science: Percentage: 96 | Grade: A+ | Grade Point: 4 |
Now Total Grade Points obtained is sum of all Grade Points in each subject:
Total Grade Points = (4.0+3.2+4.0+4.0+3.2+3.6+4.0+4.0) = 30
Grade Point Average = 30/ 8 = 3.75
Grade Point Average = 30/ 8 = 3.75
Hence the Grade Obtained is A+. examinees, parents and concerned individuals are still not familiar to the letter grading system and have confusions with the working of Letter Grading System in SLC.
